Teaching

Drum Lessons for children:

Why drums?
Instrumental tuition can vastly benefit a young, developing child in many ways: confidence building, team building (band and ensemble playing), a hobby that encourages dedication and self motivation are just a few. Drum kit tuition, particularly in young children, can broaden the interest in music. Also, in conjunction with other instrumental studies (or as a starting point), can give more depth to the understanding of rhythm and musical coordination which is so often over-looked.

Practicalities.
Most parents' nightmare: your child wants to learn to play the drums. Noise, drums and more noise! Not every house is blessed with a sound proofed garage or a shed at the bottom of the garden. Where a drum kit would be beneficial, it is not essential. The first key lessons for a beginner are designed in such a way that the material taught can be accessed without the aid of a drum kit to practice on. If the child then shows the interest to pursue the instrument further then there are suitable starter packs available or, to keep the noise to a minimum, the option of electric kits will solve any noise pollution problems or worries.

The lessons.
"Whilst drumming tuition can spiral into complex topics regarding technique and rhythmic theories, my approach is to always design lessons to cater to the needs of the individual student. So in the case of the child beginner, the time is centred on forming a basic understanding of the mechanics of the instrument and technique whilst encouraging a healthy interest in music as opposed to just making noise. All topics covered are backed up with worksheets (some with audio accompaniment) and will form a healthy basis for further study into the student's teen years, be it on the drums or other instruments."

Taking on new students from May 2008. Lessons are at Oak Cottage Studios, a brand new music facility based in Boreham, Chelmsford.
